And the sexy coffee maker winner is?

February 9th, 2010

You may remember a while back we were debating coffee makers. Well, thanks to all of your suggestions we were able to make a decision!

The Technivorm Moccamaster was our number one choice, due to great reviews and its super retro look. Doesn’t it look amazing on the teak counter top?

We’ve been using it this past week and every cup of coffee brewed has been perfect. It’s a marvel to watch it in action – so quiet, and it uses a really unique method of brewing. See it here, if you are so inclined. The water moves up a central column in the water tank (you can see some very fuzzy bubbles, the water level is just below the 2) and through an arm over to the coffee grinds, where it is sprinkled on them via about 10 little holes, distributing the hot water evenly on the grounds.

No one sells this particular model in Canada so we purchased it from Boyd’s Coffee in Oregon. [Edit: You can buy similar models at Crema Coffee in the Junction and The Green Beanery in Toronto.]

John’s been using his wooden Oji Masanori mug that my mom bought him for Christmas (from our shop!). It’s such a cool mug, because the coffee can be really hot, but your hands can hug the mug comfortably because it doesn’t conduct heat like the ceramic Kaj Frank heart mug I have been using. Oh, and the wooden mug doesn’t get coffee stains either. It feels so good to finally be able to brew our own coffee, both environmentally and for our pocket book’s sake.

Bonus cuteness:

Let me introduce you quickly to Grover’s sister, Isha. Isn’t she ridiculously ADORABLE? I’m going to go force her to snuggle right now…

  1. Congratulations with your new machine. I have the same brewer, and agree about the design. Anyhow, I am not that satisfied with the coffee, but it is absolutely good enough. Especially when we are a bunch of people.

  2. Interesting machine! I don’t really drink coffee (just Saturday morning at brunch) but I would love something like that on my counter because it is so stylish! Cute kitty cat!

  4. very nice -very industrial looking
just wish I had a counter big enough to showcase
would go nice against my industrial juicer – don’t ask – wife had to have this before we met – makes ice cream – soups etc.
love the wood mug – do you sell a taller one?
exactly how does the mug not stain? what materials is it made of?

  5. The wood mug comes in a larger size, but with no handle. It also come in a shot glass size!

It’s coated with food safe polyurethane – it’s barely noticeable to the eye but it wards off staining really well. Of course I wouldn’t leave it for days filled with coffee. We do take good care of it…

Also, the coffee maker is surprisingly small: 1.1′ x 1.2′. Crazy I know.

  6. how is Isha doing?!?

  7. Isha is doing okay, thanks for asking! She seems a bit lonely (I’m not surprised, considering we are only home at night). She wakes us up a lot in the night. I feel so bad – she has no one like her in her world…god that’s depressing. Anyway, she’ll pull through. She’s an independent gal…
